Starting with Judo in 1974, Erik Paulson has trained in many disciplines including Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali/Eskrima, Catch Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has studied with 40 different teachers over his 30 years of training including Rick Faye, Greg Nelson, Charlie Gergan, Yorinaga Nakamura, Larry Hartsell, and the legendary Dan Inosanto, who claims Erik is one of the world’s most dynamic grapplers.
Erik Paulson’s Combat Submission Wrestling Seminar is the most dominant Mixed Martial Arts training system available. CSW is a blend of STX Kickboxing, Jun Fan Kickboxing, Muay Thai, French Savate, Western Boxing, Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling, Shooto, Filipino Dumog, Judo and Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu. Leglocks are proven submission techniques at the highest levels of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, submission grappling and mixed martial arts competition. There are countless examples of smaller, weaker, and less experienced competitors using a leglock to turn the tables and tap out their opponent. Some fear of botching a leglock and ending up in a bad position, getting crushed by their opponent. As you probably know, many top grapplers go to the Half Guard position when they face their toughest oppenents. They use the Half Guard to sweep their way into the top position or submit them from the bottom.
The difficulty for someone trying to learn the Half Guard is that it is often taught as individual techniques, without including an overall strategy of what to do. Having an strategy in grappling is much more powerful than knowing individual techniques, for the following reasons:
The Dynamic Half Guard has many techniques, drills and variations (over 100 in all). The difference is that every technique is presented as part of a larger context. This means that you will develop the ability to combine techniques, flow from one attack into another, and put your opponent into progressively worse positions until he is either swept or submitted.

For conditioning I’ll kick the pads, but for fighting I work a lot more boxing now and a lot more wrestling and submission. These are some of the drills that I do for fighting. Also, I have my fighters work this material. These are the drills that they do to sharpen their hands and feet.”
