CSW 2011 Camp – Kickboxing Sparring – Sparring Tips From Greg Nelson

There is a difference between training and the technical breakdown of techniques. A lot of times people do a lot of technique and they don’t really put the training into it. They have a bunch of technique, but when it comes down to really pulling it off they have a problem. They don’t have that timing, flow, and the understanding of range. That’s what the “training” is about.

It is also important to have really good training partners. The goal is to build your skill. You train with each other. You don’t make every sparring session like a match. There is plenty of time for hard sparring. When I have my guys train for fights, I’ll have them move around and train their technique. When I call for hard rounds I tell them to keep their mouths closed, hands up, and chins down. It’s time to go! Now it’s a battle. At other times you just play to improve your skill. When you are training you must really work on form. Are your hands up? Chin Down? Am I properly moving my feet? etc.

Remember, “Training Is The Heart Of The Athletic Experience”. It’s not only about techniques. You must put in the time and TRAIN.
